During the months of April to June and September, we offer a range of adventures, catering to first-time and experienced climbers and Munro baggers, as well as those who want the ultimate challenge of completing the Cuillin Ridge traverse. A day's adventure on Skye can be long and demanding, pushing your limits, which makes them far more rewarding.

You need to be fit and healthy for a full day of climbing. Some routes require an hour or more of walking uphill to get to the start. This will be on a combination of marked paths and broken ground away from footpaths.

No previous climbing experience is needed to climb The Dubh Slabs, the Cioch, or some of the sea cliff climbs; however, some hillwalking experience is beneficial.

All the routes have elements of exposure and height, with some requiring abseiling to get to the start or to descend after climbing them. Therefore, having a good head for heights and exposure is needed.

The In Pinn stands out as the most technical summit along the Cuillin Ridge, involving roped rock climbing and an abseil descent. While technically straightforward with ample hand and foot holds, maintaining your composure is key.

Your journey begins with some easy scrambling practice on the way to the In Pinn, typically taking 2-3 hours. Once there, we will rope up and climb several pitches (sections). After capturing celebratory photos at the summit, we'll abseil back to the ground.

This should be on every mountaineer's bucket list: a 14km scramble ranging from grade I to grade III, with 3500m of ascent and descent, optional rock climbs up to Severe, and breathtaking views out to sea. We customise each traverse to individual needs. Please review all the information below regarding this extraordinary challenge.

The Cuillin Ridge Traverse is a demanding yet rewarding adventure, offering stunning views and testing your mountaineering skills. Covering 14km with 3500m ascent and descent, it includes roped and unroped scrambling, rock climbing, and abseiling. The traverse typically spans two full days, with an overnight alpine-style bivvy. Whether you're a walker or rock climber, guided options cater to your abilities and objectives, with flexibility in route and starting point. By hiring a professional guide, you can navigate the complexities, from planning to execution, removing the stress of planning, logistics and route finding.

If you are a walker/scrambler, we can guide you around the technical climbs, but if you are a rock climber or up for more of a challenge, we can tackle these. Regardless of your objectives, you still need to be a confident scrambler. We discuss our client's needs and decide on a mutually agreed-upon plan, but this can change due to the weather, fatigue, or your ability.

Depending on your objectives and the weather, we can either begin by getting a boat from Elgol, which will drop us at Loch Coruisk, and ascend to the top of Gars-bheinn. Or we can walk from Glen Brittle to the spectacular Coir' a' Ghrunnda. All options are on the table; there is no fixed itinerary, and your Guide will discuss these with you.

Due to the nature of this challenge, we ask potential clients to provide a history of their climbing, mountaineering and scrambling experience before a booking is confirmed. This is to ensure that you are suitable for a traverse attempt. It would be unfair of Guiding Solutions to accept your booking if we thought you couldn't do it, and also, it is a matter of safety for you and your Guide. We may advise that you book a day or two of scrambling practice, specifically on the Cuillin, so we can provide some instruction, assess your technical ability and fitness, and provide feedback regarding a traverse attempt. However, we assess each booking form individually.

You don't necessarily have to be a rock climber, as all the technical rock climbs can be avoided. However, there is a lot of exposed roped scrambling (up to grade III), combined with loose rock and long days (8+ hours). Therefore, you need to be confident on this terrain and able to move efficiently carrying a rucksack with your bivvy equipment, clothing, food and water.

Summary

A very good level of fitness, capable of scrambling for eight hours per day with your rucksack

A good amount of mountaineering experience in the UK and/or abroad, preferably with some on the Cuillin, but not essential

If you want to climb the TD Gap (Severe), Kings Chimney (VD) and Naismiths Route (Severe), you must be capable of seconding up to severe.

We only guide small groups, and for this course, the ratio is:

You might be lucky and arrive in perfect weather, but the more days you commit, the greater your chances of success.

If the weather or other factors prevent a traverse, the course would be changed to either a Munros Course, Guided Rock Climbing or a combination. This can be flexible and decided with you and your Guide, but it would mean you still get to complete some classic scrambles and climbs and summit some of the Cuillin Munros.

Embarking on the journey of lead climbing is an exhilarating step, offering access to new adventures and disciplines like winter climbing. If you've been seconding climbs and are ready to take the lead, the Peak District's diverse traditional routes await, ranging from slabs to overhangs and jamming cracks. Our course covers essential skills such as belaying, gear placement, anchor building, rope management, abseiling, climbing grades, guidebooks, and more.

For those with sport climbing holidays on the horizon, our sport climbing learn-to-lead course ensures you feel confident leading and descending routes safely. We'll cover route selection, belaying, bolt clipping, safe descent techniques, and more.

Delivered at your pace with safety as our priority, our courses prioritise building your confidence. Your first lead will only be undertaken when you're fully prepared.

You need to be fit and healthy, able to be outside for full days of climbing, potentially in bad weather.

You can answer 'yes' to the following points. Please contact us if you are unsure.

Know how to fit a harness correctly
Know how to tie in correctly
Confident belaying someone on a bottom rope
Familiar with some climbing equipment, i.e. nuts/wires, cams, hexes, slings & quickdraws (you don't have to have used them)
Have completed some climbing outdoors, either on a bottom rope or, ideally, as a second

Our learn-to-lead courses aim to gradually introduce you to the safe practices needed to approach and tackle a lead climb. Therefore, we have found that running a three-day trad course is more productive, as we don't have to rush, ensuring that all individuals are learning at an appropriate pace. We want you to leave the course feeling confident. However, we are always happy to chat further after a course to clarify anything.
